Peter Johnke Named Deputy Director of VCIL

April 26, 2018

The Vermont Center for Independent Living has named longtime employee Peter Johnke deputy director. He has been involved with assistive technology since first joining the disability rights organization in 1990. For the past few years, he has managed VCIL’s database and computer network. As a non-driver, Peter also advocates for expansion and improvements to public transportation. He serves on national, state and local transportation advisory committees.

Peter said, “I want to create a world that works for everyone. We may have different disabilities that affect us in different ways, but everyone is striving to live the best life we can.”

In his new role, Peter will be providing support/supervision to the various programs that VCIL runs to promote the dignity, independence and civil rights of Vermonters with disabilities. He will also help the executive director serve as the public face of the organization.

VCIL Executive Director Sarah Launderville said, “Peter is part of the fabric of VCIL and I’m thrilled that he has accepted this new role. His knowledge and skills will allow VCIL to continue to support individuals with disabilities to live independently.”
