Renowned Entertainer To Perform At ADA Celebration

July 10, 2013

The 23rd anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act will be celebrated at the Main Street Landing Black Box Theatre in Burlington on July 26. Tom Sullivan − blind entertainer, author and inspirational speaker – will perform.

Sullivan’s claims to fame are numerous and include appearing on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” 60 times and singing the national anthem at a Super Bowl.

The event is being presented by the Vermont Center for Independent Living, a nonprofit organization directed and staffed by people with disabilities working to promote the dignity, independence and civil rights of Vermonters with disabilities.

VCIL Executive Director Sarah Launderville said, “We are proud to bring a performer of Tom’s caliber to the Green Mountain State in celebration of the ADA’s anniversary. We are grateful to Shannon Reynolds and her family for making this connection and to Main Street Landing for their donation of use of the Black Box Theatre. Without these connections we would not have been able to put this show together.”

She added, “We hope people will join us for this fun event on the Burlington waterfront.”

Doors open at 5 p.m. and an art show featuring pieces by artists from the Brandon Training School will be on display. Tom Sullivan will perform from 6:30 to 8 p.m. A VIP reception featuring a meet and greet with Sullivan, refreshments and a cash bar will be available.

The event will also feature a raffle including many fabulous prizes. Tickets are $5 apiece or five for $20. Prizes include an iPad Mini (32GB), courtesy of VCIL ($429 value); dinner for two at NECI on Main, courtesy of the New England Culinary Institute; a one-year membership to Frog Hollow-Vermont State Craft Center ($100 value); two felted Sculpt-a-Bowls, courtesy of Gardener’s Supply Company ($44.90 value); a $20 gift card to Sweetwaters American Bistro; a smokey quartz necklace from Tradewinds ($115 value); four linen napkins and one table cover, courtesy of VCIL; a barbecue set from Homeport; a certificate for $100 off a purchase of $200 or more at Perrywinkle’s Fine Jewelry; a certificate for lunch or brunch for two at Leunig’s Bistro & Cafe; and a handcrafted mug from Linda B. Pottery, along with a $5 Starbucks gift card.

Co-sponsors of the event include the Vermont Department of Disabilities, Aging & Independent Living, the Vermont Developmental Disabilities Council, Denis Ricker & Brown Insurance, Vermont Businesses for Social Responsibility, AFSCME, SEIU, Opportunities Credit Union, the Vermont Network Against Domestic and Sexual Violence, The Medical Store, the Vermont Workers’ Center and Main Street Landing.

Congress passed the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990 with an eye toward preventing discrimination, in all aspects of society, against people with disabilities. President George H.W. Bush signed the act into law, proclaiming, “Let the shameful walls of exclusion finally come tumbling down.”
